The Giver is a novel describing a small community where everything is continually perfect. In this community there is no war, no pain, no argue. All the inhabitants of the community live in a perfect osmosis. Jonas who is about to be a Twelve is a perfect boy. Polite, courageous, and serious, he is about to be selected as the future receiver of memory in the next ceremony of Twelve. The receiver of memory is the most honorable, the most respectful status in the community. He must keep in his mind, his hearth, and his body all kinds of feelings, pain…etc. In brief, all what a human being must keep or must be confronted to habitually and what all the inhabitants of the community don’t have. In this perfect community, there are many rules that peoples must respect. If they disobey the rules, they must receive a punishment.
The ceremony day of Twelve arrived. Everybody got his assignment, but the turn of Jonas came, the chief of Elder didn’t assign him. Jonas was very surprised and embarrassed. However, at the end the chief of Elder told him solemnly that he will be the next receiver of memory. Jonas felt very separate and alone because the receiver of memory is a very hard job. The first day of training is about to start. Jonas entered the room where the receiver of memory works and begin his training. Days went by, and weeks. Jonas learned a lot: colors, pain, the sensation of warm and cold, war…etc
